Missed the match? Here’s its highlight

At Old Trafford, Manchester United defeated 10-man Real Sociedad with a hat-trick from captain Bruno Fernandes, securing a quarterfinal matchup with French team Lyon in the Europa League.

United got off to the worst start possible as Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the penalty spot after being brought down by Matthijs de Ligt.

United needed a win to keep alive their hopes of bringing home trophies from Ruben Amorim’s first season as manager and knowing that the tournament is their only realistic chance of securing European football next season.

The third penalty of the evening was surprisingly necessary to put United ahead. Aritz Elustondo lodged a complaint long after Patrick Dorgu was found to have been fouled by him.  Fernandes scored his 14th goal of the season from the penalty spot.

Jon Aramburu’s dismissal for dragging down Dorgu, who would have gone through, appeared to be the final opportunity for the Spanish visitors halfway through the second half.

With a low shot across goal and into the far corner, Fernandes completed his hat-trick for the team. In stoppage time, Diogo Dalot, another Portugal international, scored the fourth goal.
