Three people killed in suspected poisoning of Christmas cake in Brazil. It was reported that five members of the same family were unwell after consuming the cake and two people were later confirmed dead.
According to local media, a police commander in Brazil has revealed that one of the three women who perished after consuming a Christmas cake had arsenic in her blood.
The woman who created the cake and a 10-year-old kid, both of whom are currently in the hospital, had blood test results that also showed the presence of the extremely dangerous substance.
At a party on Monday afternoon in Torres, in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, five members of the same family were unwell after consuming the cake.
During a check of the woman’s home, police also discovered a number of expired food products, and they have sent the cake for testing. It’s still unclear whether the suspected poisoning was deliberate, they added.
The cake’s test results should be available by next week, the local media reported.
Police on Friday asked to exhume the body of a man who was the late husband of the woman who prepared the cake. Police stated his death was considered natural at the time, but he died in September from food poisoning.
Both of these instances are still under investigation, and she is not currently regarded as a suspect.
The woman who prepared the cake was among the six out of seven attendees of the Christmas event who had it on Monday afternoon.
She is the only person thought to have consumed two slices of her baked cake, according to police, and her testing showed the highest levels of arsenic, they told Brazilian television.
Police head Marcos Vinicius Veloso told local media that several family members had complained about the cake’s “peppery” taste.
At approximately 1:00 local time (04:00 GMT) on Tuesday, the family started to exhibit symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea, and five of them went to the Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes Hospital for medical attention.
According to the hospital, two sisters passed away from cardiac arrest a few hours later. The local media has identified them as Tatiana Denize Silva dos Santos, 43, and Maida Berenice Flores da Silva, 58.

The hospital reported that the third victim passed away later Tuesday night from “shock after food poisoning” after a blood test revealed levels of arsenic.
Locally, she has been identified as Neuza Denize Silva dos Anjos, age 65.
