The first official photos of Pope Francis lying in an open coffin were released by the Vatican on Tuesday, signaling the start of the funeral services.
The Holy See released the solemn images, which depict the late pope wearing a bishop’s mitre and red liturgical garments while holding a rosary in his folded hands.
It is anticipated that the funeral will occur between Friday and Sunday. In his last will and testament, Francis deviated from custom by asking to be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome instead of St. Peter’s.
As early as Wednesday, his remains may be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica so that the faithful could honor him.
