The song “Tell Your Papa,” which condemns the nation’s leader, has been banned by Nigerian authorities from being played on air.

The song, which was released earlier this week, has received a lot of attention on Nigerian social media and has generated discussion on the nation’s security and economic circumstances.

Its slammed President Bola Tinubu and urged his son, Seyi, to inform his father that “hunger” exists in the nation and that “people are dying” at the hands of hardship and instability.

Abdulkareem informs Tinubu’s son on the track that his father “is not trying” and that he has made “too many empty promises” in a combination of English, Yoruba, and Pidgin.

In order to experience the risks that regular Nigerians face, the artist advises Seyi to take the road rather than a private jet when it comes to insecurity.

The National Broadcast Commission (NBC), which grants licenses and oversees the sector, sent a letter to radio and television stations ordering the song to be taken off the air because it is against the nation’s broadcast code.

In the letter, NBC labeled the song to be “inappropriate” and “objectionable” and added that it’s below falls public decency standards.

President Tinubu’s economic reforms, including dropping the fuel subsidy, increased living costs, and inflation.

Inflation was above 30% last year, and basic food items increased. This has led to reduced food consumption and insecurity concerns, such as kidnapping-for-ransom and Boko Haram resurgence in the north-east. The song aimed at addressing these issues

Given that he previously recorded a song of a similar nature, Abdulkareem is no stranger to controversy.

Nigeria jaga jaga (which translates to “Nigeria has spoiled”) is his most well-known song to date, and it was released in 2003.

Then, in a severe reaction, President Olusegun Obasanjo openly disparaged Abdulkareem. Despite being prohibited for broadcasters, the song became a street anthem and became well-liked by Nigerians.

“His new song “Tell Your Papa” is receiving massive support from Nigerians and currently trending on X.
