According to the UN, more than 100 female detainees were raped and burned alive during a jailbreak in Goma, Congo. Last Monday, hundreds of prisoners escaped Munzenze prison as M23 rebel militants took control of the city.

During the jailbreak, male detainees assaulted between 165 and 167 women, according to an internal UN document obtained by the BBC.

According to the story, the convicts set fire to the facility, killing the majority of the women.

Goma, a significant metropolis of over a million people, was captured as the Rwandan-backed M23 launched a quick march into eastern DR Congo.

The city descended into turmoil, with bodies littering the streets and missiles apparently soaring over residential homes.

People fled the structure as smoke flared in the backdrop, according to video footage from last week’s jailbreak. Heavy gunfire was also audible.

The UN estimates that at least 2,900 people were murdered during the battle, with 2,000 dead buried and another 900 still in the city’s morgues.

Earlier this week, the rebels announced a humanitarian ceasefire.

However, the M23 launched a second onslaught on Wednesday, according to sources, and apparently captured the mining town of Nyabibwe.

Nyabibwe is around 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Bukavu, the east’s second-largest city and the apparent target of the rebels’ most recent push.

The Congolese authorities have mobilized hundreds of civilian volunteers to protect Bukavu.

Meanwhile, Malawi has stated that it will begin plans to evacuate its peacekeeping personnel from the nation. This follows the deaths of three of its soldiers in the combat near Goma.

They were members of a southern African force led by South Africa. Although 14 South Africans have been slain, President Cyril Ramaphosa has pledged to maintain his military in the nation.

Back in Goma, locals are adjusting to life under the M23, and there are fears of a cholera breakout.
