In Delhi, the capital of India, heavy fog and poor air quality have made travel extremely difficult.
Early Friday morning visibility in a number of locations was reported to be zero, causing delays in road transportation, trains, and airplanes.
Bad weather has caused dozens of trains to run behind time and more than 150 planes to be delayed, according to reports.
Every winter, this issue recurs in northern India, where low temperatures between December and January trap pollutants near the ground, reducing visibility and making travel challenging.
The state-run Safar website states that the air quality index in Delhi was more than 400 in a number of locations. This exceeds by more than 25 times the World Health Organization’s (WHO) safe limit.
The capital’s authorities have reinstated pollution control measures, such as prohibiting construction and demolition and allowing online learning for classes.
Images and videos from Delhi and the surrounding areas showed a layer of fog obscuring buildings and covering roads and farmland. Due to poor visibility, the Delhi airport has warned travelers that there may be delays.
“While landings and take offs continue at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected,” the warning stated.
A system known as CAT III permits aircraft to land in low visibility situations.
Flightradar24, a service that tracks flights, reports that arrivals at Delhi airport were delayed by about 20 minutes and departures by over 30 minutes.

Many travelers complained about the disorder at the airport on social media.
On X, a user commented, “No display of boarding gate and it seems no one knows the exact status,” According to Indian Railways, fog is causing 26 trains to arrive in the city to be delayed.
Light showers are likely to enhance visibility during the weekend, according to India’s weather department.
