Afenifere Leader Pa Ayo Adebanjo Dies At 96
On Friday morning, he passed away quietly at his home in Lekki, Lagos State. At the age of 96, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent patriot, elder statesman, and head of the Pan-Yoruba sociocultural organization, passed away.
Peacefully, he passed away on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos State. He is survived by his wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, 94, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Adebanjo, a Yoruba nationalist, lawyer, and radical politician, was born on April 10, 1928, in Isanya Ogbo, a community close to Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, South-West Nigeria.

Prior to studying law in the United Kingdom, he worked as a journalist. He was called to the English Bar after finishing his studies.
At a young age, Chief Adebanjo entered politics as a Zikist, a supporter of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, and joined the movement in 1943.
He did, however, join the Action Group’s youth section in 1951 and was a political pupil and protégé of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.
Up to his passing, he continued to be involved and vociferous in Nigerian politics, supporting Peter Obi of the Labour Party’s bid for president in 2023 with his Afenifere group.
