Vice President Kashim Shettima has accused Kemi Badenoch, the recently elected head of the UK Conservative Party, of demeaning Nigeria, her origin.

He said this on Monday at the State House in Abuja at the 10th Annual Migration Dialogue.

“Kemi Badenoch, the leader of the British Labour or Conservative Party,” Shettima stated. Despite her attempts to disparage her country of origin, we are proud of her.

She is entitled to her own opinions; she has even every right to remove the Kemi from her name but that does not underscore the fact that the greatest black nation on earth is the nation called Nigeria.” he added.

“One out of every three, four black men is a Nigerian, and by 2050, Nigeria will support the United States, and will be the third most populous nation on earth,” the vice president said, highlighting Nigeria’s importance on the global scene.

Shettima also emphasized in his speech how important immigrants are to the development of society and the expansion of the economy.

He emphasized the government’s dedication to upholding the rights of migrants and honoring their contributions to the advancement of the country.

In 2022, Badenoch, a Nigerian-born member of the UK parliament, charged Nigerian leaders with embezzlement.

According to Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), the commission contacted her office after she was elected leader of the UK Conservative Party in November 2024 but did not receive a response.
