After two decades of unwavering hope and global attention, Saudi Arabia’s Prince Al-Waleed bin Khalid Al-Saud — known to many as the “Sleeping Prince” — has passed away at the age of 36. The prince spent 20 years in a coma following a devastating car accident in London in 2005.

A Life Frozen in Time
In 2005, then 15-year-old Prince Al-Waleed suffered a life-altering brain hemorrhage and internal bleeding after a tragic crash in London, where he was reportedly training at a military academy. The injuries left him in a persistent vegetative state, and he was transferred to King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh, where he remained under intensive medical care until his death on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
The prince was widely known throughout the Arab world due to his long-term coma and his family’s decision to keep him on life support. His father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, consistently rejected medical recommendations to withdraw support, holding on to hope for a miraculous recovery. Over the years, brief moments — such as the prince moving a finger or showing minimal eye activity — were shared on social media and sparked public emotion and prayers.
The funeral prayers for Prince Al-Waleed were held on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh. Men and women attended prayers at separate times, in accordance with tradition. Mourning ceremonies are being observed by the royal family and the wider community from July 20 to 22.

The Saudi Royal Court confirmed the prince’s passing through official channels, including the Saudi Press Agency (SPA). Condolences have poured in from across the Arab region and beyond, with global Muslim organizations and leaders expressing sorrow and admiration for the family’s long-standing devotion.
A Symbol of Hope and Faith
Prince Al-Waleed became a symbol of hope, resilience, and deep familial love. His father’s public devotion, coupled with widespread emotional investment from the Saudi public, made his story unique among modern royal narratives. Despite being in a coma for two decades, the prince’s presence remained strong through videos, prayers, and remembrance.
In the eyes of many, Prince Al-Waleed’s journey reflected not only medical perseverance but also spiritual commitment. His story will remain etched in the hearts of Saudis and others around the world who followed his condition over the years.
