Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, has declared a short-term ceasefire to the war in Ukraine.

According to the Kremlin, the ceasefire will last from the morning of May 8 to May 11, which is when World War Two victory celebrations take place.

Putin announced the ceasefire “based on humanitarian considerations,” according to a statement. Ukraine has not yet replied.

The statement’s translation read: “Russia believes the Ukrainian side should follow this example.

“The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will respond appropriately and effectively if the Ukrainian side violates the ceasefire.

“The Russian side once again declares its readiness for peace talks without preconditions, aimed at eliminating the root causes of the Ukrainian crisis, and constructive interaction with international partners.”

Over Easter, the Kremlin declared a similar 30-hour ceasefire, but both sides accused one another of hundreds of violations.

The most recent declaration coincides with what the United States has called a “very critical” week for peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

The Trump administration has vowed to withdraw if they do not see progress in the efforts by Washington to mediate a settlement between the two parties.

Approximately 20% of Ukraine’s territory is currently under Russian control, including the southern Crimea peninsula that Moscow acquired in 2014. Russia began a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

Since 2022, hundreds of thousands of people have reportedly been killed or injured on all sides, the great majority of whom were military.
