Newcastle United trampled the Red Devils 4-1 to go fourth in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
Following goals from Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, Harvey Barnes scored twice in the second half as Newcastle overtook Chelsea and Manchester City and made a significant move toward guaranteeing a Champions League spot for next season.
Tonali’s volley gave Newcastle the lead and they got off to a strong start and before halftime, Alejandro Garnacho tied the score, but Barnes quickly doubled the margin after the break.
After Andre Onana’s mistakes against Lyon in the previous Europa League match, Ruben Amorim decided to rest him. However, this did not prevent another goalkeeping error, as Guimaraes punished Altay Bayindir’s missed pass for Newcastle’s fourth goal.
The Europa League second leg against Lyon on Thursday is now crucial for the visitors, who are still in 14th place. Joshua Zirkzee is a serious worry after hobbling off in the second half due to a hamstring injury.
