A Ukrainian F-16 fighter jet was lost and its pilot killed during efforts to fend off a massive Russian missile and drone attack, Ukraine’s military confirmed on Sunday morning.
This marks the third loss of an F-16 fighter jet since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
According to a statement from Ukraine’s air force on Telegram, the pilot successfully deployed all onboard weapons and managed to shoot down seven aerial threats. However, while targeting the final one, the jet sustained damage and began losing altitude.
In a heroic final act, the pilot diverted the aircraft away from populated areas but was unable to eject in time, the statement noted.
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a staggering 537 drones and missiles overnight into Sunday, highlighting the scale of the ongoing aerial assault.
