On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump announced plans to sell special residency privileges known as “gold cards” for $5 million each, with the possibility that Russian oligarchs may be eligible for it.
Trump claimed that sales of the new visa, which is a more expensive version of the green card, will help create jobs and lower the national deficit of the United States.
“You have a green card, this is a gold card,” Trump informed reporters in the Oval Office Tuesday. “Green card” holders are permanent residents of the United States who are not citizens.
“We’re going to be selling a gold card. You have a green card, this is a gold card. We’re going to be putting a price on that card of about $5 million,”
“It’s going to give you green card privileges plus it’s going to be a route to (American) citizenship,” “A lot of people are going to want to be in this country, and they’ll be able to work and provide jobs and build companies, It’ll be people with money.” POTUS added.
In response to the question of whether rich Russians could also apply, Trump said it was a possibility.
“Possibly. I know some Russian oligarchs that are very nice people. It’s possible,” Trump said. “They’re not as wealthy as they used to be. I think they can. I think they can afford $5 million.”
Since Moscow invaded Ukraine three years ago, several Russian oligarchs have been subject to western sanctions. The US president told reporters that while it was not now on the table, removing sanctions on Russia might happen “at some point.”
On who could qualify for the “Gold Visa”, Trump said “It’ll be people with money,” without noting any job-creation requirements.
