A tragic incident has cast a shadow over the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Ibadan, as a student was reportedly killed by a stray bullet while on his way to write his exam.

According to multiple eyewitness accounts, the student was riding on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother when the incident occurred on Tuesday along Gbagi Market Road in the Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State. He was reportedly en route to his examination centre to participate in the exam being administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).

Preliminary findings suggest that the bullet was allegedly fired by a police officer who was in pursuit of a suspect. In a devastating twist of fate, the bullet struck the student, leading to his untimely death.

The loss has sparked public outcry and renewed conversations about the dangers of stray bullets, especially in densely populated areas, and the broader issue of policing protocols in Nigeria.

This heartbreaking event serves as a grim reminder of the many layers of insecurity faced by young people striving to pursue their education in difficult environments. As investigations continue, one hopes that justice will be served—and that stronger measures will be implemented to prevent such needless tragedies in the future.

One eyewitness, identified simply as Ajani, recounted that a police officer opened fire while in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle. During the chase, a bullet allegedly struck the student, who was on a motorcycle with his father and twin brother at the time.

The victim was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where he was unfortunately declared dead on arrival.

In a powerful display of grief and outrage, a group of distraught youths carried the student’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, demanding justice and calling on Governor Seyi Makinde to take immediate action.

The remains of the young student were later deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital morgue.

At the time of this report, authorities had yet to issue an official statement addressing the tragic incident.
