A major construction accident in northwest China has left six people dead and 10 others unaccounted for after part of a railway bridge collapsed into the Yellow River on Friday, according to state media reports.

Dramatic footage aired by state broadcaster CCTV captured the moment the middle section of the steel arch bridge suddenly gave way, crashing into the waters below. Authorities later confirmed that a failure in one of the steel cables was behind the collapse.

At the time of the incident, 15 workers and a project manager were on-site. Initial reports put the death toll at seven, but officials later clarified the number as six.

The bridge was being built along the Sichuan–Qinghai Railway and was hailed as the world’s largest-span double-track continuous steel truss arch bridge. It also held national significance as the first railway steel truss arch bridge to cross the Yellow River, China’s second-longest river.

Photos shared by Chinese media show the collapsed midsection, with cranes and scaffolding still towering over the partially built structure.

Emergency services quickly mobilized, deploying hundreds of rescue workers to search for the missing. Efforts are ongoing.

Unfortunately, industrial accidents of this scale are not rare in China, often linked to weak enforcement of safety regulations. Just last December, a construction site cave-in in Shenzhen left 13 workers missing, with no survivors found.

This latest disaster once again raises questions about safety standards on some of China’s most ambitious infrastructure projects.
