A Mexican social media star, age 23, was shot and killed while live streaming on TikTok, according to the state prosecutor’s office.
According to the state prosecutor’s office in Jalisco, Valeria Marquez was killed when a guy showed up to her beauty salon in Guadalajara “and apparently fired a gun at her.”
According to the state prosecutor, the case is being examined as a femicide, which is when women and girls are killed because of their gender. Though the motivation for the deadly attack has not been determined.
According to the UN, ten women or girls are killed by partners or family members in Mexico every day, making gender-based violence a very prevalent problem there.
Just before she passed away, Ms. Marquez was doing a livestream from her beauty salon in the Zapopan area while seated at a table with a stuffed animal.
The video only stops when someone else picks up her phone to turn off the recording, and she is shot dead seconds later.
According to local media accounts, a man who pretended to be bringing her a gift killed her.
The state prosecutor said that when police arrived at the scene at approximately 18:30 local time (12:30 GMT), they verified Ms. Marquez’s death.
A suspect has not been named by the prosecutor’s office.
Following Ms. Marquez on social media, where she had around 200,000 followers on Instagram and TikTok, her death has shocked her fans.
