Did you know that varicocele, a condition affecting more than 10% of men, could be harming your fertility without you even knowing?

Scroll up to learn what it is and how you can prevent it

🔑 WHAT IS IT?

Varicocele happens when veins in the scrotum (the pouch holding the testicles) become swollen and enlarged.

It is like varicose veins but in a much more sensitive area,  and can sometimes lead to infertility.

🔑 WHAT CAUSES IT?

The exact cause isn’t always clear.

One suggestion is that veins in your scrotum have small valves that guide blood flow. If these valves don’t work properly, blood pools in the veins, making them swell. This swelling creates extra heat, which can harm sperm production and lower fertility.

🔑 WHAT ARE THE SIGNS?

– Many men with varicoceles don’t experience symptoms

Others might experience:
– A dull, aching pain in the scrotum, especially after standing for a long time or physical activity

– Swollen veins that feel like a “bag of worms” under the skin

– One testicle, usually the left, can be feeling much smaller or different in size

– Fertility issues or difficulty conceiving

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

– Varicocele is more likely during puberty and commonly affects men aged 15–25.

Some suggestions include:

– Standing for long periods, which increases vein pressure

– Frequent heavy lifting, which strains the veins

– A family history of varicose veins or circulation issues.

🔑 DIAGNOSIS

A varicocele is diagnosed through a physical examination. The swollen veins may be visible and can feel like a “bag of worms”.

Physical examination is usually supplemented by a scrotal ultrasound to assess the size and blood flow of the affected veins.

🔑 TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment for varicoceles typically involves surgery or minimally invasive procedures like embolization. These options help to redirect blood flow and relieve pressure on the veins.

🔑 PREVENTION TIPS

– Thing is, you cannot always stop varicocele from happening, there are habits that can lower your risk

HABITS LIKE:

Avoid standing for too long
if your routine involves prolonged standing, take breaks to sit or move around to relieve pressure on the veins.

Lift carefully
Use proper techniques when lifting heavy objects, and avoid overstraining your body.

Stay active
Regular exercise improves blood circulation and keeps veins healthy. Low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling are excellent choices.

Maintain a healthy weight
Extra weight can add pressure to your veins. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help manage your weight.

Wear supportive underwear
Supportive or athletic underwear can reduce strain on the scrotum, especially during exercise.

Hydrate well
Drinking water regularly improves circulation and reduces the risk of vein-related issues.

🔑 MORE PREVENTION TIPS

Quit smoking
Smoking affects blood circulation and increases your risk of vein problems, including varicocele.

Limit alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol can damage your blood vessels and harm vein health.

Avoid tight clothing
Wearing tight pants or underwear for long periods can increase pressure in your scrotum.

Check your posture
Poor posture can affect blood flow. Sit and stand in ways that support good circulation.
