An investigation into a case of alleged rape that Swedish media had connected to French football captain Kylian Mbappé has been closed by Swedish prosecutors.
According to Marina Chirakova of the Swedish Prosecution Authority, the inquiry into a purported incident that occurred in Stockholm has been closed since there is insufficient evidence.
One of the most well-known football players, the Real Madrid player, was never officially named by Swedish authorities or informed that he was suspected of a crime.
When the accusations first arose in October, Mbappé’s attorney stated that her client was getting ready to vindicate his name by filing a defamation lawsuit.
Mbappé called the reports “fake news” at one point. The evidence was judged “not sufficient to proceed further, and the investigation is therefore closed” by senior prosecutor Ms. Chirakova, who oversaw the preliminary investigation.
The publication Le Figaro said that the football player’s attorney chose not to comment. According to reports, the alleged rape and two instances of sexual harassment happened on October 10 in a hotel in the Swedish capital.
Mbappé was listed as a suspect by a number of Swedish media outlets, including the public broadcaster SVT and the newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen.
In an interview with the French TV show Clique on Sunday, Mbappé revealed that he was “not involved” in the case, saying, “I haven’t received anything, no summons… I’m not involved.”
His lawyer had previously denounced the Swedish media reports as defamatory and stated that nothing was known about the complaint.
At the time, he was in Stockholm, where police were observed visiting the Bank hotel where he had stayed, with officers later departing with bags. According to one report, they had taken hotel clothing as evidence.
