May 2025 — Controversial Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso has been deported from South Africa just weeks after being acquitted of over 30 charges, including rape, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation.

Omotoso, leader of Jesus Dominion International in Gqeberha, had been at the center of one of South Africa’s most high-profile sexual abuse cases. Arrested in 2017, he spent nearly nine years in prison awaiting trial. The charges stemmed from allegations made by young women associated with his church.

In April 2025, the Gqeberha High Court ruled that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt. The verdict sparked widespread backlash, with critics calling it a blow to the fight against gender-based violence.

Despite his acquittal, Omotoso was re-arrested on May 10 on immigration charges. South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs declared him a “prohibited person” under the Immigration Act. He was officially deported to Nigeria shortly thereafter.

The outcome of the trial drew sharp criticism from activists, political leaders, and members of the public. Cheryl Zondi, a key witness and survivor, said she feared Omotoso would continue his alleged misconduct. ActionSA, a political party, called for a permanent ban on his return and for his name to be placed on the national sex offenders registry.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) is currently reviewing the judgment and considering a possible appeal. Legal experts say the case highlights serious gaps in South Africa’s handling of complex sexual abuse cases.
