Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has weighed in on Alexander Isak’s ongoing transfer saga, urging the Newcastle striker to rethink his approach as he pushes for a move away from St. James’ Park.

Isak has reportedly gone on strike in a bid to secure a transfer, with Liverpool believed to be leading the chase for his signature. But Rooney, now a pundit on Match of the Day, believes the Swedish forward is handling things poorly and risking long-term damage to his reputation.

When a player refuses to train, it makes it almost impossible to rebuild trust with teammates and the club,” Rooney said. “Maybe he’s getting the wrong advice, but this isn’t the way to do it. And if you’re Liverpool, you also have to ask—do you really want a player willing to abandon his team like this?”

.The former England captain drew from his own career, admitting he twice asked to leave Manchester United during his playing days, first in 2010 and again in 2013. Both times he reversed his decision, and looking back, he believes there’s a lesson for Isak.

I’ve been in that position myself, telling United I wanted to leave. But there’s a right way to handle it and a wrong way. Isak is going about it the wrong way,” Rooney added.

Isak and Eddie Howe

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has kept the door open for reconciliation, but with tensions rising and Liverpool lurking, Isak’s future remains uncertain. One thing is clear: Rooney’s warning carries the weight of experience—sometimes how you leave a club matters just as much as where you’re going next.
