JUST IN: 51 people have been killed and numerous homes have been destroyed in Monday’s attack on the Zike town in Kimakpa, Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Community leader Wakili Tongwe of Kwall said that the attackers broke into the village early on Monday and fired intermittently at locals who were running for their lives after hearing gunfire.

A group of vigilantes, including the community leader and a few security guards, were on patrol in another community when the attackers broke into the village and began shooting.

Approximately 36 people were shot dead, and four more died subsequently, despite the fact that the security forces battled the intruders and were able to resist them.A few more residents were shot and are still in the hospital getting treatment.

Less than two weeks after fifty-two people were killed in certain communities in the Bokkos Local Government Area of the North-Central state, authorities in the state have not yet responded to the attack.

Gunmen have been attacking entire communities in Plateau State for a number of decades. A violent attack on a predominantly Christian village at Christmas 2023 claimed the lives of almost 200 people. About 40 people were slain and houses were set on fire in the town of Wase in May of last year.

According to experts, one of the main causes of the attacks is the competition between farmers and herders for resources.

However, Caleb Muftwang, the state’s governor, claims that there’s more to the attacks.

Following the current spate of attacks, the Federal Government has been serious on flushing out the assailants.
