The US government has warned Nigerian travelers that overstaying their visas can have serious repercussions, including permanent bans from entering the country.
The immigration officials explained that it is practically impossible to dodge penalties for prior infractions because consular agents have access to a person’s whole immigration history.
On Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria posted the warning via its X account:
They also emphasized that travelers must abide by the conditions of their visa and that it will not be tolerated to claim ignorance of the rules. The US mission said excuses such as “honest mistake” are not tenable.
According to information obtained, individuals who overstay their visa for more than 180 days but less than a year may be prohibited from entering the country for three years. A 10-year ban might be the punishment if the overstay is longer than a year.
