The Mexican government is implementing a citizen disarmament program that aims to reduce violent crime by offering up to $1,300 to those who turn in firearms, including assault rifles and machine guns.

The country’s official gazette announced late Monday the financial incentives for individuals who drop off guns at religious collection stations.

As part of a citizen disarmament initiative designed to lower violent crime, the Mexican government intends to provide up to $1,300 to those who turn in firearms, including assault rifles and machine guns.

The nation’s official gazette announced the financial rewards for individuals who submit firearms at church collection locations late Monday.

A revolver costs 8,700 pesos ($430), an AK-47 rifle costs 25,000 pesos ($1,200), and a machine gun costs 26,450 pesos ($1,300).

She said, “It’s about setting up places like the lobbies of churches where people can go to turn in their weapons voluntarily, and give them economic incentives to give up their firearms,”

Violent crime is a major problem in Mexico and is associated with the multibillion-dollar illegal drug trade.

Initial data from the National Statistics Institute shows that firearms were responsible for 70% of the 31,062 killings that occurred in the nation in 2023.

Mexico has frequently pushed Washington to address arms trafficking over the border from the United States and strictly regulates gun sales, making them nearly impossible to obtain legally.
