On Wednesday, Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Athletic Bilbao in La Liga, and coach Carlo Ancelotti stated Kylian Mbappe was “sad” after missing another penalty.
Los Blancos allowed league leaders Barcelona to maintain their four-point lead, and the French superstar suffered more agony from 12 yards out a week after missing the penalty kick against Liverpool in the Champions League.
Alejandro Berenguer gave Bilbao the lead early in the second half, then Jude Bellingham gave Madrid the equalizer following Mbappe’s missed penalty.
In the 80th minute, however, a Fede Valverde error allowed replacement Gorka Guruzeta to steal fourth-place Athletic’s triumph. Following weeks of harsh criticism, the loss and Mbappe’s missed penalty will put even more strain on the former Paris Saint-Germain forward.
“Obviously (Mbappe) is sad, disappointed, but he has to continue,” Ancelotti said to reporters. Although Mbappe has scored ten goals in his first twenty outings for Real Madrid in all competitions, he is having trouble staying consistent.
“He’s not at his best level but we have to give him time to adapt, he’s scored 10 goals, he can do better and he’s working to do that,” stated Ancelotti.
Although Mbappe scored, the goal was disallowed for offside, and the referee considered Rodrygo’s claim for a penalty but concluded the Brazilian winger went down too easily.
On the other end, Berenguer should have given the home team the lead, but he was set up by Inaki Williams’ deft backheel and blasted high over the bar.
Early in the second half, Courtois was only able to palm an Inaki Williams cross into his path, but the forward made amends by bundling home from close range.

Meanwhile, Mbappe consented to let Bellingham take a penalty against Getafe on Sunday after he missed his own against Liverpool.
This time, though, the French striker took the initiative, but Agirrezabala was able to deflect his feeble attempt, which was again to the goalkeeper’s left, at a comfortable height.
Real Madrid only had two losses in all competitions the previous season, which helped them win both the La Liga and the Champions League, but this was their fifth loss of the current season.
