Jose Mourinho’s time in Turkey has come to an abrupt end after just over a year in charge of Fenerbahce. The club confirmed on Friday that the 62-year-old manager has officially stepped down following their 1-0 defeat to Benfica in the Champions League qualifiers.
Mourinho, who took charge in June 2024, guided Fenerbahce to a second-place finish in the Super Lig last season, narrowly missing out on the title to arch-rivals Galatasaray. Despite an unbeaten start to the new league campaign, the early European setback proved costly.
In a statement, Fenerbahce thanked Mourinho for his service:
Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties since the 2024-25 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.

The decision marks another high-profile twist in Mourinho’s long managerial career, which has included stints at Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan.
Interestingly, Mourinho’s departure comes just hours after another former Manchester United boss, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was dismissed by Besiktas following their UEFA Conference League play-off defeat to Lausanne.
Fenerbahce now face the challenge of finding a replacement who can build on Mourinho’s short but impactful tenure while keeping their domestic title ambitions alive.
For Mourinho, the question remains, where will “The Special One” land next?
