At least 12 people are killed in Hindu religious festival celebration stampede in northern India.

People who were sleeping along the Prayagraj riverbanks were trampled by those who had dipped in the sacred waters during the Kumbh Mela celebration. On stretchers, emergency personnel had been observed removing what looked to be bodies.

The number of fatalities or injuries has not yet been formally confirmed.

Up to 100 million people are anticipated to attend the bathing day at the Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious events in the world, according to officials.

As posted on social media, India’s defense minister described the incident as “extremely painful”
“My deepest condolences to the bereaved families of those who have lost their loved ones in this accident. Along with this, I wish for the speedy recovery of all the injured”. He added.
