Tension has gripped Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State following the abduction of two staff members of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) by suspected gunmen.

The incident, which occurred on Monday evening, took place at the victims’ residence in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area.

Confirming the attack in Akure on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, revealed that security operatives had swiftly launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.

“Yes, two AAUA staff were abducted by suspected kidnappers. However, our operatives responded promptly and rescued one of the victims.
The Commissioner of Police has directed that the rescued individual be debriefed for intelligence that could aid in locating the remaining victim,” Ayanlade said.

One of the victims, Omoniyi Eleyinmi — a faculty officer in the Faculty of Education and a member of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) — was reportedly kidnapped around 7pm on Monday from his home along Supare-Akoko Road.

The abduction has once again raised pressing questions about safety in Ondo State, as residents call for stronger security measures to curb the growing menace of kidnapping.
