The U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) allows citizens of 41 nations to enter the United States without a visa for a maximum of 90 days.
Through this program, eligible travelers can travel to the United States for either tourism or business without having to go through the traditional visa application process.
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are among the nations covered by the VWP.
How It Works
Travelers from these nations are exempt from requiring a visa to enter the United States for 90 days or less as long as they are there for business or tourism. Before they go, they must obtain an authorized Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA).
If they still want a visa or don’t fit the VWP standards, they can still apply for a B-1 (business) or B-2 (tourist) visa using the standard procedure.
Who Still Needs to Submit a Visa Application?
The Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 requires certain people to apply for a U.S. visa even though they are nationals of VWP nations. This pertains to:
Citizens who, on or after March 1, 2011, traveled to or were in North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, or Yemen.
individuals who traveled to Cuba on or after January 12, 2021.
Dual nationals of a VWP country and Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.
Travellers Must Have A Valid ESTA
Under the VWP, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) uses an online system called the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) to assess a person’s eligibility to enter the country for business or tourism. Only those from VWP nations who have a valid ESTA approval prior to boarding the mode of travel they have selected to visit the United States are permitted to enter the country without a visa.
To apply for it or find out more about the system, go to the ESTA website.
