The center that former US President Jimmy Carter created has confirmed his passing.
He passed away on Sunday afternoon in his hometown of Plains, Georgia, according to the Carter Center, which promotes democracy and human rights globally.
The Democratic president was plagued by diplomatic and economic issues during his tenure from 1977 to 1981.

He received the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts, which helped him rebuild his reputation after he left the White House with dismal approval ratings.
