The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, June 6, and Monday, June 9, 2025, as public holidays in observance of this year’s Eid-ul-Adha celebrations.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement released by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani. The Minister congratulated all Muslim faithful and called for reflection on the values of sacrifice, obedience, and unity that the occasion represents.
Significance of Eid-ul-Adha
Eid-ul-Adha, also known as Eid-el-Kabir in Nigeria, is one of the most important festivals in the Islamic calendar. It commemorates the unwavering obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in submission to God’s command. In recognition of his devotion, God provided a ram to be sacrificed in his son’s place.
Muslims around the world honor this act of faith through the ritual sacrifice of livestock, with the meat distributed among family, friends, and especially the less privileged. The festival is a profound reminder of faith, charity, and community spirit.
How Eid is Celebrated in Nigeria
In Nigeria, Eid-ul-Adha is marked with special congregational prayers held in open fields or large mosques. After the prayers, many Muslims who can afford it carry out the sacrifice of animals such as rams, goats, or cows. The meat is then shared in three parts: one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for those in need.
Families also gather to share meals, visit loved ones, and express gratitude. It is a period of spiritual renewal, charity, and togetherness across communities.
Government’s Call to Unity

Minister Tunji-Ojo urged Nigerians, regardless of faith, to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity, and development in the country. He emphasized that the values of sacrifice and compassion that define Eid-ul-Adha should guide all citizens in their daily lives.
The declaration of public holidays on June 6 and June 9 allows Muslims across Nigeria to fully observe and celebrate Eid-ul-Adha 2025. As families come together in joy and worship, the nation is reminded of the enduring importance of faith, generosity, and unity.
Eid Mubarak to all celebrating!
