Ex-presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, dies at 72

Dr. Doyin Okupe, the former presidential spokesperson for former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, dies at 72.

After reportedly suffering from a long-term illness, Okupe of Iperu-Remo, Ikenne Local Government area, Ogun State, passed away early Friday morning in Lagos.

Okupe served as President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity. He was President Goodluck Jonathan’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs, and the former Director-General of Peter Obi’s 2023 campaign for president.

The death of Doyin Okupe Okupe has been characterized as a “profound personal loss” by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun.

The governor added “Even in his later years, while battling health challenges, Dr. Okupe remained unwavering in his advocacy for a better Nigeria. Even as he faced health struggles and the frailties of age, Okupe never stopped championing the cause of national development. His voice will be deeply missed,”

Okupe’s strong political views and unvarnished sentiments were well-known. Being able to handle Nigeria’s complicated political environment made him a well-liked political figure.
