Borussia Dortmund have officially completed the signing of midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka from Chelsea, securing the 21-year-old on a contract that runs through 2030.
The England U21 international joins the Bundesliga side for a reported €25 million ($29m) fee after an impressive loan spell last season, where he featured 17 times across all competitions and helped Dortmund reach the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
Despite struggling with injuries, Chukwuemeka’s talent shone through, earning him a permanent move. Reflecting on the transfer, he expressed his delight:
I’m happy Borussia Dortmund is now my footballing home. I will give everything to make sure we achieve our goals as a team.
From Villa to Chelsea, Now Dortmund
Born in Austria, Chukwuemeka moved to England as a child and rose through Aston Villa’s youth system before sealing a high-profile transfer to Chelsea in 2022. However, limited opportunities at Stamford Bridge—where he made just five appearances last season, including in the UEFA Conference League win over Astana—opened the door for his Dortmund breakthrough.
Dortmund’s sporting director Lars Ricken hailed the signing, describing Chukwuemeka as a player who “increases the quality and creativity of our attacking midfield.”
A Busy Summer at Dortmund

Chukwuemeka’s arrival adds to Dortmund’s exciting summer recruitment, which has already seen the club sign Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland and Yan Couto from Manchester City. The move also draws parallels with Jobe’s brother, Jude Bellingham, who made his name at Dortmund before joining Real Madrid in a blockbuster transfer.
Reports in Germany suggest Dortmund could further bolster their squad before the transfer window closes, with Chelsea defender Aaron Anselmino, Wolves striker Fabio Silva, and even a potential return for Jadon Sancho all being discussed.
On the managerial front, Dortmund also extended head coach Niko Kovac’s contract until 2027, signaling stability ahead of the new season.
With Chukwuemeka now tied down long-term, Dortmund fans will be eager to see how the young midfielder develops as part of the club’s next exciting generation.
