The dust is finally settling on one of the Premier League’s most talked-about transfer sagas. Newcastle United defender Dan Burn has broken his silence on Alexander Isak’s controversial move to Liverpool, admitting it was a “tough situation” for everyone involved but insisting he has no hard feelings toward his former teammate.
Isak, who scored freely during his time at St. James’ Park, forced the issue this summer after Newcastle initially refused to sanction his record-breaking £130 million switch to Anfield. The Swedish striker refused to play, was frozen out of first-team training, and ultimately got his wish leaving Magpies fans furious in the process.

Burn, however, struck a more sympathetic tone. Speaking ahead of England’s World Cup qualifier, the veteran defender explained:
“I’ve been in football long enough to understand that careers are short. Players want to achieve as much as they can. For Alex, this was something he felt he needed to do. Of course, it was difficult for us as a team, but I’ve got nothing but good wishes for him.”
The 25-year-old’s departure left supporters divided. Many vented their anger, branding Isak a “rat” during matches. Burn, a lifelong Newcastle fan himself, said he understands the reaction:
“As Newcastle fans, we’re protective of the club and the city. We want players who want to be here. I get why fans were upset. But from my side, there’s no animosity.”
Isak reportedly sent a farewell message to the squad’s group chat, thanking teammates for their support and memories. Burn confirmed the players replied warmly despite the tension.
Still, he admits the saga cast a shadow over what had been a positive season:
“It took a little shine off things, but that’s football. Careers are short, and players want to maximize their opportunities. Now, we move forward.”
Newcastle wasted no time reinvesting, bringing in young German striker Nick Woltemade for a club-record £65 million, alongside former Brentford forward Yoane Wissa. Burn remains optimistic the pair can replace the goals lost with Isak’s departure.
“At the end of the day, Alex is still my mate. It was a tough situation, but he’s got the move he wanted, and the club got a huge fee. We’ve strengthened, and hopefully the new lads will deliver.”
For Newcastle, the focus shifts back to the season ahead. For Isak, it’s all eyes on Liverpool and he’ll no doubt be circling the date when he faces his old club.
