“Promoting the healthy and stable development of China-South Korea ties accords with the common interests of both sides,” Beijing stated.
Following the start of proceedings by Seoul’s Constitutional Court against impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, China pledged on Monday to work toward “healthy and stable” relations with South Korea.
Due to his brief attempt to halt civilian rule, which caused one of Asia’s largest economies to experience its worst political unrest in years,
Yoon was suspended from office by the South Korean parliament on Saturday.
The Constitutional Court has about six months to decide whether to uphold the impeachment. “South Korea is a friendly cooperative partner and China’s significant neighbor.”
At a routine news conference on Monday, Beijing’s foreign ministry stated that fostering the positive and steady growth of China-South Korea relations aligns with the interests of both countries.
According to ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, “maintaining peace and stability on the Korean peninsula is in the interests of all sides and demands that all sides make active efforts.”
He also stated that China’s policy toward South Korea is stable and constant. Lin refused to respond when asked directly on the impeachment, claiming that it was “South Korea’s internal affair.”
Despite being significant trading partners, the two nations have long been politically out of sync. North Korea is primarily supported politically and economically by China’s ruling Communist Party, with whom Seoul is still officially at war.
While relations between Washington and Beijing have deteriorated, South Korea remains a vital ally of the United States and is home to a robust American military.
In a bold speech last week, Yoon claimed that the main opposition party had prevented him from enforcing anti-espionage legislation that could have been used to punish Chinese individuals who were allegedly eavesdropping on South Korean intelligence and defense facilities.
Beijing said the remarks hurt the growth of bilateral relations and that it was “deeply surprised and dissatisfied.”
