Cameroon’s long-standing leader, President Paul Biya, has officially announced his intention to seek an eighth term in the upcoming presidential election scheduled for October 12, 2025. At 92, Biya holds the distinction of being the world’s oldest active head of state.
The announcement was made on Sunday through his verified social media platforms in both French and English. In a statement posted on Facebook, Biya declared, “I’m running for the presidential election on October 12, 2025. Rest assured that my determination to serve you is matched to the severity of the challenges before us. Together, there are no challenges we cannot overcome. The best is still to come.”
If re-elected, Biya could potentially remain in office into his late 90s, extending a presidency that began back in 1982. His decision comes just weeks after false rumors of a military coup circulated online—claims that were later debunked by fact-checkers from Cable Check.
Speculation around Biya’s health and grip on power often surges when he disappears from public view. Last year, his prolonged absence sparked unfounded death rumors, which prompted the government to ban local media from reporting on his health status. Officials later confirmed he was in good health and frequently spends time resting in Geneva.
In recent weeks, however, the president has increased his public engagement on social media, leading up to this much-anticipated campaign announcement. As the election approaches, all eyes remain on Biya’s next move and how Cameroonians will respond to another bid from their decades-long leader.
