A helicopter and an American Airlines aircraft collided in midair in Washington, DC, and crashed into the Potomac River.

There were three US Army soldiers on the military helicopter, while the plane, which was traveling from Wichita, Kansas, had 60 passengers and four crew members.

In windy, gloomy circumstances, about 300 emergency personnel are in “rescue mode,” with boats and police divers scouring the ocean for survivors.

There is no official update on casualties, but police authorities informed CBS News that 18 bodies have been found.

The Federal Aviation Administration told CBS News that the crash occurred at approximately 9 p.m. local time while approaching Runway 33 at Reagan Washington National Airport.

President Donald Trump of the United States thanks emergency personnel for their “incredible work” and claims to have been briefed on the “terrible accident.”
