Peter Nwachukwu, the late gospel singer Osinachi’s husband, was sentenced to death by hanging on Monday by Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court Wuse Zone 2 in Abuja.
On April 8, 2022, Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide, which caused the death of the deceased (his wife).
The defendant was found guilty after the court determined that the prosecution had met the legal burden of proof.
On behalf of the Federal Government, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation (OAGF) arraigned Nwachukwu on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge.
Among other charges, the defendant was charged with culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, cruelty to minors, and spousal violence.
Two of the late Osinachi’s children were among the 17 witnesses the prosecution named throughout the trial; they testified as the fourth and fifth prosecution witnesses, PW4 and PW5, respectively.
Additionally, the prosecution presented the court with 25 documents as exhibits. The defendant summoned four additional witnesses, presented four exhibits, and testified on behalf of the defense.
Reginald Nwali, the defendant’s attorney, begged the court to be lenient in its decision in his allocutus just before sentencing. Likewise, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, the prosecution’s attorney, implored the court to enforce the law as specified.
Nwachukwu was subsequently sentenced to death by hanging on Count 1, while he was sentenced to two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8,9, 12, 13, and 18.
