A 50-year-old man, Modu Isa, from Hausari Ward in Bama, Borno State, has survived a disturbing suicide attempt after stabbing himself in the stomach three times before severing his genitals.

The shocking incident, which has left residents both stunned and divided, was shared on Saturday by counter-insurgency expert and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle.

According to neighbours, Isa’s drastic action followed his estranged wife, Bayanxe Modu’s refusal to return to him. One resident recounted Isa saying: “If Bayanxe cannot have me, then my manhood too must go.”

Isa was rushed to the General Hospital in Bama, where doctors performed an emergency operation to reattach his severed organ — a procedure locals have since dubbed “Operation Return Gbola.”

The bizarre case has sparked mixed reactions in the community. While some sympathised with Isa’s heartbreak, others responded with disbelief and dark humour. One resident quipped: “Instead of cutting onions for stew, he was cutting his thing.”

An elderly man, unwilling to be named, described the incident as surreal, saying: “This is not a suicide attempt; this is a Borno comedy show. Only here can a man lose his manhood on Friday and get it back on Sunday.”

Authorities have since transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Maiduguri. When contacted, Borno State Police PRO, ASP Nahum Daso, said he would respond to inquiries, but no update had been provided as of press time.
