Barcelona Strip Ter Stegen of Captaincy, Araujo Takes Over

In a surprising leadership reshuffle, FC Barcelona have announced that German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has been relieved of his duties as first-team captain. The club cited ongoing disciplinary issues as the reason behind the decision, confirming that vice-captain Ronald Araujo will step into the role for the time being.

According to an official statement from the club, the move was made in agreement with the coaching staff and sporting director. “Following the disciplinary proceedings opened against player Marc-André ter Stegen, and until this matter is definitively resolved, the club has decided to temporarily withdraw his role as first-team captain,” the statement read.

Dispute Over Medical Paperwork

The disciplinary action stems from a standoff involving Ter Stegen’s refusal to sign a medical report requested by La Liga. The document, which relates to his recent surgery, is essential for Barcelona to officially declare him unavailable — a necessary step to free up salary space under La Liga regulations. This space is crucial for registering new signings, including goalkeeper Joan Garcia, whose addition is pending league approval.

Ter Stegen’s refusal to comply has complicated the club’s financial and squad management plans, prompting the opening of a formal disciplinary case.

Araujo Steps Up

In light of the situation, 26-year-old Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo has been appointed as acting captain. While it’s currently a temporary measure, Araujo could retain the armband permanently depending on the outcome of any leadership review ahead of the new season.

Despite the internal conflict, some of Ter Stegen’s teammates have publicly supported him. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong recently stated, “I support Ter Stegen — he’s Barcelona’s captain,” underscoring the complex dynamics within the dressing room.

As the new season looms, Barcelona will be hoping this leadership transition brings stability, both on and off the pitch.
