Dismas Mutai from Uasin Gishu County’s Eldoret has been distraught after losing KSh 2.8 million (about N33 million) that was intended for his study abroad to sports betting.

According to reports, Dismas Mutai lost the sizeable cash when placing a wager on the online gambling site Aviator. Since then, he has resorted to social media to ask for help from politicians and other well-wishers.

He acknowledged that the loss had impacted his mental health and conveyed his sadness. Mutai acknowledged his error and the toll it has taken on his life, and he used the platform to ask for the help of good-willed Kenyans.

He expressed regret to his family for letting them down and said that, despite his sincere hopes for a better future, he had battled gambling addiction.

Additionally, he made a request for forgiveness from his community, highlighting his prior participation in village activities and his desire for a second chance. “Perhaps the UK was not meant for me, but just give me a chance to survive so that I can be a living testimony to many,” Mutai pleaded.

Mutai had obtained a scholarship to attend Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in London to pursue a Master of Science in International Project Management. According to screenshots circulated online, his program was scheduled to start on January 13, 2025, and end on January 16, 2026.

Numerous Kenyans have responded to the incident on the internet, denouncing gambling as a risky habit that can result in both financial ruin and psychological suffering. Some urged the government to control or outlaw websites like Aviator in order to stop future occurrences of this kind.
